For Five Days I Wasn’t Watching

Breaking a habit of overthinking by become an observer failed for five days.

For the last five days I was not an observer. I felt no change — until the continuous chatter, the strange circling thoughts, half dream, crept in during morning sleep.

So I made a conscious effort. One thought: just watch the thought that comes. This was in shallow sleep — mind aware but lazy, eyes not willing to open, not willing to lift myself out of bed.

I watch the thoughts. They stop. In an instant the calm returns, the circling politics subside.

After this, for two days, away from work, I lived the moment. Not thinking about the future or reworking the past, except momentarily. And my actions felt effortless — household chores, exercising, resting, talking.

Now I understand Osho on Ashtavakra when he says, make it a habit. Here the 2-day rule is failing. I know it is years of anchoring that has to change, and the 2-day rule will help me at best.

Remember, I have to be an observer.
